Getting to Know Michael Tkacik
King Musa: "Dr. Tkacik, welcome to the podcast! Can you tell us a bit about your background and your role at SFA?"
Michael Tkacik: "Thanks for having me. I’m a professor of political science at Stephen F. Austin State University, where I teach courses in international relations, U.S. foreign policy, and national security. My career has taken me through some unique paths—law, academia, and even leadership positions in higher education. It’s been a rewarding journey."
Personal Background and Academic Journey
KM: "What inspired you to pursue a career in law and later transition into academia?"
Tkacik: "Growing up, I was drawn to the idea of public service, which led me to law school at Duke University. After practicing law for a time, I realized I wanted to focus on education and research, which is what led me to pursue a Ph.D. in political science. It’s been fulfilling to guide students and help shape their understanding of the world."
Professional Roles and Responsibilities
KM: "What are some of the key responsibilities you’ve held during your career?"
Tkacik: "In addition to teaching, I’ve served as the Director of the School of Honors at SFA, where I worked to enhance opportunities for academically gifted students. I’ve also led international programs, helping students gain a global perspective through study abroad experiences. These roles allowed me to combine my passion for leadership with my commitment to education."
Insights on Higher Education
KM: "What do you think are the biggest challenges facing higher education today?"
Tkacik:
- Accessibility: "Higher education must remain accessible to a diverse student body, which means addressing financial barriers and ensuring inclusivity."
- Global Perspective: "We need to equip students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an interconnected world."
- Adapting to Technology: "The rise of online learning and technological advancements presents both challenges and opportunities for educators."
Leadership and Lessons Learned
KM: "What’s a key lesson you’ve learned in your leadership journey?"
Tkacik: "Patience and listening are critical. As a leader, you need to take the time to understand different perspectives and make informed decisions that benefit the broader community."
KM: "What’s your leadership style?"
Tkacik: "I believe in collaborative leadership—working alongside my colleagues to identify challenges and develop solutions. I also prioritize transparency and open communication."
Advice for Students and Professionals
KM: "What advice would you give to students aspiring to leadership roles?"
Tkacik: "Never stop learning. Whether it’s through formal education or life experiences, growth comes from being curious and open to new ideas. Also, don’t be afraid to take risks—sometimes the biggest opportunities come from stepping out of your comfort zone."
