 Intro by King Musa

“Yo, what it is? You know what it is. It’s your man, King Musa! Welcome to The Cheat Sheet, the podcast where we decode success for creators, professors, and business owners.

Today, we’re focusing on student success and the resources available to help students thrive at Stephen F. Austin State University. Joining us is Ms. Raquel Skidmore, Director of the Student Success Center. Raquel is dedicated to providing the guidance, support, and tools that students need to excel academically and personally. We’re excited to hear about her journey and the impact the Student Success Center has on helping students reach their full potential. Welcome, Ms. Skidmore!”

Getting to Know Raquel Skidmore

King Musa: “Welcome, Ms. Skidmore! Let’s start with a fun icebreaker since it’s midterms season. What are your go-to tips for surviving midterms?”

Raquel Skidmore: “Thanks for having me, Musa! At the Student Success Center, we meet with a lot of students during this time to do check-ins and provide support. My top tips are:

1. Don’t procrastinate—start early.

2. Use a variety of study methods like recall exercises or teaching the material to a friend.

3. Take breaks and prioritize self-care. Stepping away and coming back with fresh eyes makes a big difference.”

KM: “Great advice! Now, can you introduce yourself and share what you do at SFA?”

RS: “I’m Raquel Skidmore, Director of the Student Success Center, located on the first floor of Steen Library. We provide a variety of programs and services to support undergraduates throughout their academic journey, helping them stay on track and graduate.”

Personal Background and Passions

KM: “Where did your passion for higher education come from? Did your parents attend college?”

RS: “I’m a first-generation college student, so my parents didn’t attend college. When I was in school, there weren’t many support services for students like me. I experienced imposter syndrome and often felt out of place. But I knew I wanted to succeed. That journey inspired me to help others navigate college and feel like they belong.”

KM: “What do you enjoy doing outside of work?”

RS: “I’m a huge fan of live music—my husband and I attend concerts regularly. We have a bucket list of bands from the ‘70s and ‘80s, like Journey and Def Leppard, that we’re checking off. I also love spending time with my family, taking girls’ trips, and exploring unique places like Round Top, Texas.”

Vision for the Student Success Center

KM: “What’s your vision for the Student Success Center?”

RS: “Our mission is to ensure students have the tools, resources, and support they need to succeed. We run programs like the New Lumberjack Experience (SFA 1101), peer mentorship, and Generation Jacks, which supports first-gen students. We also provide academic advising, TSI testing, and support for scholarship programs like the Smith-Hutson Scholarship. Our ultimate goal is to help students feel like they belong and graduate successfully.”

KM: “What’s one initiative you’re particularly excited about?”

RS: “We’re proud to support over 40% of SFA’s student body, who are first-generation students. We recently joined the First-Gen Forward network, which provides resources to better serve these students. In November, we’re hosting First-Gen Week, culminating in a big celebration on November 7th with free t-shirts, professional headshots, and guest speakers. It’s going to be a great way to honor first-gen students.”

Challenges and Advice

KM: “What challenges do you face as Director of the Student Success Center?”

RS: “The biggest challenge is juggling multiple responsibilities. I manage a staff of five, serve on university committees, and still advise students directly. It’s a lot to balance, but staying focused on our mission—to put students first—helps keep everything on track.”

KM: “What advice would you give students wondering if college is right for them?”

RS: “Take time to reflect on your goals and priorities. Remember, the first semester can be overwhelming—it’s a huge adjustment. If things feel rocky, don’t let that discourage you. Learn from your mistakes, try new strategies, and don’t hesitate to seek help. Success isn’t about perfection—it’s about growth and persistence.”

Outro by King Musa

“Ms. Skidmore, thank you for sharing your journey and shedding light on the vital role the Student Success Center plays at SFA.

To all our listeners, remember that success is within reach with the right support and mindset. Whether you’re a first-gen student or just navigating midterms, the resources are here to help you thrive.

This is your man, King Musa, signing off. Stay focused, stay resilient, and keep telling your story. Peace!”
