Yo, what it is? It's your man, King Musa! Welcome to the latest edition of The CheatSheet, the podcast where we decode success for creators, professors, and business owners. I'm your host, King Musa, and today we're diving deep into the world of higher education and fine arts with someone who's shaping the future of SFA's College of Fine Arts. We have Dr. Gary, the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University, here to share insights, challenges, and a vision for the future. Let’s get into it!
Getting to Know Dr. Gary
King Musa: "Dr. Gary, thanks for joining me today. Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your role at SFA?"
Dr. Gary: "It’s great to be here. I’m the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at SFA. My role involves overseeing all aspects of our fine arts programs, ensuring we provide an outstanding education and environment for our students, faculty, and staff. We focus on preparing our students for success in the arts, both in the classroom and beyond."
Personal Background and Leadership Journey
King Musa: "You’ve had a diverse path to becoming a leader in the fine arts. Can you tell us about your background and what led you to this position?"
Dr. Gary: "I’ve always had a passion for the arts and education. Before I became the Dean here, I worked as a faculty member and in various leadership roles in other institutions. My journey has been shaped by a dedication to helping students develop their creative potential and ensuring they are equipped for success in the competitive world of the arts."
The Challenges of Leading in the Fine Arts
King Musa: "Leading a college can be challenging, especially in the arts. What are some of the obstacles you face as the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at SFA?"
Dr. Gary: "One of the biggest challenges is ensuring we have the resources needed to offer a world-class education. While we have a great foundation here at SFA, we’re always looking for ways to enhance the student experience, whether through faculty support, facilities, or scholarships. Another challenge is enrollment—while we’ve been growing, we have to constantly find ways to attract and retain students in a competitive landscape."
The Role of the Fine Arts at SFA
King Musa: "What makes the Fine Arts Division at SFA unique, and what do you want people to know about it?"
Dr. Gary: "SFA’s College of Fine Arts is unique because of our hands-on approach. We don’t just teach students in the classroom; we provide them with real-world opportunities to showcase their work and develop their craft. Our students are consistently performing in front of audiences, displaying their art, and engaging in collaborative projects that prepare them for the professional world."
Vision for the Future and Exciting Developments
King Musa: "Looking ahead, what developments or initiatives are you most excited about for the College of Fine Arts?"
Dr. Gary: "I’m thrilled about our new Fine Arts building, which is a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance our students' educational experience. We’ve also seen some incredible progress in terms of our enrollment numbers and faculty development. I’m focused on ensuring we continue to grow and adapt, not only to meet the demands of the arts industry but also to support our students and faculty in every way possible."
Advice and Leadership Philosophy
King Musa: "What’s your leadership philosophy? How do you balance overseeing such a diverse department?"
Dr. Gary: "My leadership philosophy is centered around collaboration. I believe in empowering my team, whether it’s faculty or staff, to take ownership of their areas and lead with creativity. As a leader, I try to step back and allow others to shine, while also providing the resources and guidance they need. I also try to approach challenges with an open mind and a sense of humor."
