Intro by King Musa
"Yo, what it is? You know what it is. It's your man, King Musa! Welcome to The CheatSheet, the podcast where we decode success for creators, professors, and business owners. I'm your host, King Musa, and today we’re stepping into the world of research and graduate education with an expert.
We have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Forrest Lane, Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Lane has been instrumental in driving research initiatives and supporting graduate students at SFA. Let’s dive in!"
Getting to Know Dr. Lane
King Musa: "Dr. Lane, could you introduce yourself and describe your role as Dean of Research and Graduate Studies at SFA?"
Dr. Lane: "Sure! The role of Dean of Research and Graduate Studies is broad. I serve as the Chief Research Officer, supporting all things research, from external grants to compliance with research rules. We work with both faculty and students, including undergraduate research and graduate student experiences. Essentially, we help everyone from application to graduation while ensuring that research activities are ethical, impactful, and well-supported."
Personal Background and Path to Leadership
KM: "Where are you from, and what led you to this role at SFA?"
Dr. Lane: "I grew up in several places but consider San Antonio, Texas, home. I studied political science and economics at Texas A&M University and later transitioned into academia after working in the energy business. My career evolved from student affairs to faculty roles and leadership positions in research and graduate education. Opportunities came along the way, and I embraced them to grow into this role."
Balancing Work and Life
KM: "What are your personal interests outside of academia?"
Dr. Lane: "I enjoy running, though I’ve slowed down as I’ve gotten older. My happy place is the beach—I love spending time by the coast. Outside of work, my three middle-school-aged kids keep me busy with their activities."
Research and Graduate Studies at SFA
KM: "What are some key initiatives from your office?"
Dr. Lane: "We’re working to improve the graduate student experience through new programs like university-wide orientations and thesis/dissertation boot camps. For faculty, we focus on securing funding for innovative projects. Being part of the UT system has amplified our ability to invest in research and infrastructure. For example, we’ve dispersed over $1.6 million in research equipment grants in just the past year."
Challenges and Advice for Graduate Students
KM: "What are some challenges graduate students face, and how can they overcome them?"
Dr. Lane: "Graduate school is more than just an extension of undergrad. It’s about specializing in a field, conducting original research, and creating knowledge. Students need to develop clear career goals, engage in meaningful research, and seek mentorship. These elements are crucial to thriving in graduate education."
KM: "What advice would you give to students considering advanced degrees and careers in research?"
Dr. Lane: "Be curious and intentional about what you want to achieve. Graduate school is about finding mentors who can guide you through your journey. Take time to connect with faculty and explore programs that align with your passions and goals."
