 Intro by King Musa

"Yo, what it is? You know what it is. It's your man, King Musa! Welcome to The CheatSheet, the podcast where we decode success for creators, professors, and business owners. I'm your host, King Musa, and today we’re diving into the world of forestry and agriculture with an expert leader shaping these fields.

We have an incredible guest today: Dr. Matthew McBroom, Associate Dean of the College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. McBroom brings years of experience and groundbreaking research in forestry and environmental sciences. Let’s get into it!"

Getting to Know Dr. McBroom
King Musa: "Dr. McBroom, can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role at SFA?"
Dr. McBroom: "Absolutely! My name’s Matthew McBroom, and I’m the Associate Dean of the College of Forestry and Agriculture at SFA. I started out as a forest hydrologist, focusing on balancing forestry practices with water quality. My role now is to help our students and faculty thrive, ensuring we combine the environment and economy for mutual benefit."

Personal Passions and Career Beginnings
KM: "Where did you grow up, and how did you discover your passion for forestry and agriculture?"
Dr. McBroom: "I grew up in rural East Texas and graduated from Rusk High School. My love for the outdoors came naturally from hunting, fishing, and exploring. Initially, I planned to pursue engineering, but a chance discovery of SFA's forestry program changed everything. Required field trips? That hooked me! I knew forestry was my path, and it felt like home from day one at SFA."

KM: "What are your hobbies outside of work?"
Dr. McBroom: "I love the outdoors—hunting, fishing, gardening, hiking, and even beekeeping. My wife sells our honey at the farmer's market. Being outside is my therapy; it recharges me after a long day."

Leadership Journey and Challenges
KM: "What was the journey like becoming Associate Dean?"
Dr. McBroom: "It was unexpected! I started as an assistant professor and grew into administrative roles over time. Honestly, I struggled with imposter syndrome when I first became Associate Dean. But I learned to listen, collaborate, and put the team’s needs above my own. It’s been a humbling and rewarding experience."

KM: "What’s been the biggest challenge in leadership?"
Dr. McBroom: "Setting aside my personal opinions to advocate for others. Leadership isn’t about being right; it’s about collaboration. Also, taking accountability while giving credit to the team has been essential for building trust and achieving our goals."

Exciting Initiatives and Future Vision
KM: "What are some exciting things happening in the College of Forestry and Agriculture?"
Dr. McBroom: "We’re thrilled to be part of the UT system, which brings new opportunities for students and faculty. A major highlight is the construction of our new four-story building, merging forestry and agriculture programs. Additionally, our research projects, like improving water quality in Lanana Creek, are making a real impact. Our students are doing amazing work through clubs and hands-on learning opportunities."

Advice for Students and Graduates
KM: "What advice would you give to students pursuing forestry, agriculture, or any field?"
Dr. McBroom: "Consistency is key. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Focus on your goals, put in the work every day, and be patient. Delayed gratification, whether in education or a career, always pays off. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about persistence and growth."
