With a wealth of experience in teaching, mentoring, and leadership, Dr. Johnston has a vision that inspires. Let’s get into it!"
Getting to Know Dr. Johnston
King Musa: "Dr. Johnston, can you introduce yourself and share what you do here at SFA?"
Dr. Johnston: "Absolutely! I’m Joyce Johnston, Associate Dean of the College of Liberal and Applied Arts. I’ve been at SFA for 22 years, starting as a French and Spanish professor. My role now involves supporting faculty and students, overseeing our advising center, and helping with college initiatives. It’s all about connections and ensuring everyone has what they need to succeed."
Personal Background and Career Beginnings
KM: "Where did you grow up, and what inspired your path into languages and education?"
DJ: "I was born in Chicago and moved to Oklahoma City as a child. My passion for languages started in first grade when a teacher introduced us to French. I loved it instantly and pursued it throughout school. After earning my bachelor’s in French and Spanish at Trinity University in San Antonio, I traveled to France, taught junior high, and eventually earned my master’s and Ph.D. in French at Indiana University Bloomington."
KM: "What do you enjoy outside of work?"
DJ: "Traveling is my favorite. I love exploring new places with my family, hiking, and returning to France whenever I can. I’m also a bookworm—I enjoy everything from Haitian literature to suspense novels like Stephen King."
Vision for Liberal and Applied Arts
KM: "What is your vision for the College of Liberal and Applied Arts, and what initiatives are you focused on?"
DJ: "Our vision centers on supporting students through strong faculty connections and professional advising. A major initiative is our new mentoring program, pairing students with faculty to build meaningful relationships. We’re also hosting events like the Faculty Success Series, helping faculty explore topics like generative AI. It’s all about fostering growth and connection."
Career Journey and Challenges
KM: "How did you grow from a French professor to Associate Dean?"
DJ: "It’s been a step-by-step process. Starting as a professor, I later became involved in multidisciplinary programs and mentoring initiatives, which gave me a taste of administration. Encouragement from colleagues and family helped me embrace leadership roles. The key was recognizing when I needed guidance and seeking support from my peers."
KM: "What challenges have you faced in your career?"
DJ: "One challenge was adjusting to the demands of graduate school, which required me to up my game. Later, as an administrator, I faced tough moments like dealing with probation cases. Success comes from overcoming mistakes, asking questions, and seeking advice from experts around me. SFA’s supportive environment has been key."
Advice for Students
KM: "What advice do you have for students considering a career in liberal and applied arts?"
DJ: "Study what you love—passion drives success. Don’t pursue something just because others tell you to. Build relationships with your professors and advisors, and take advantage of their experience to explore career options. Be honest about your interests and seek guidance to align your goals with your talents."
