Intro by King Musa
"Yo, you know what it is! It's your man, King Musa! Welcome to Hub Hero, the podcast where we break down the seven dimensions of wellness and how they shape your life at Stephen F. Austin State University. I'm your host, King Musa, and today we’re diving into intellectual wellness.
We’re talking lifelong learning, critical thinking, and how to stay sharp during your college years. Joining me is Ms. M.E. McWilliams, Director of the AARC (Academic Assistance and Resource Center). Let’s get into it!"
Getting to Know the AARC
King Musa: "Ms. McWilliams, welcome to the show!"
M.E. McWilliams: "Thanks for having me! Just to clarify, I’m not a doctor, but I’ve been married to one. And hey, I’ve been teaching long enough—it’s close!"
KM: "You’ve earned it! Before we get started, how’s the weather treating you?"
McWilliams: "It’s been rainy, which is fine by me, but I was hoping for some sun since I’m on vacation."
Academic Support for Intellectual Wellness
KM: "Let’s dive right in—what academic services does the AARC offer to boost intellectual wellness at SFA?"
McWilliams: "I’ll start with our walk-in tables. No appointments needed—students can drop by for help. Each subject has different hours, so check the website for times. Just search 'SFA AARC' and boom, you’ll find everything you need."
KM: "So you’re saying all I need to do is Google 'SFA AARC'?"
McWilliams: "Exactly. That’ll show you available tutoring times by subject. It’s easy—just use the dropdown menus to find what you need. We offer support for math, writing, chemistry, and a lot more."
Supplemental Instruction (SI) Groups
KM: "I’ve heard of SI groups—what’s the deal with those?"
McWilliams: "SI groups are tied to specific courses with high difficulty or failure rates. If your professor recommends an SI session, take advantage of it. These are led by students who’ve taken the course and passed with flying colors. They know the tests and can guide you through it."
KM: "Is there limited space for SI groups?"
McWilliams: "Nope, no appointments needed. Your professor will announce the times in class and via email. Just show up and get the help you need."
Why Participation Matters
KM: "Why is active participation in these services so important?"
McWilliams: "Because you learn best when you engage with the material. At the AARC, we create a low-pressure environment where tutors guide you through the process—no pop quizzes or awkward moments. It’s all about collaboration."
KM: "A lot of students hesitate to ask for help. How do you make it less intimidating?"
McWilliams: "We get that. Some students don’t want to admit they’re struggling. But waiting until after you fail a test isn’t the move. Come to the AARC early, even if you think you don’t need it. Trust me, it pays off."
Who Can Use the AARC?
KM: "Who can take advantage of AARC services?"
McWilliams: "Every SFA student. We cover core classes—writing, math, biology—and plenty of upper-level courses. Just check the website to see if we offer tutoring for your subject."
Appointments and Private Tutoring
KM: "What about private tutoring?"
McWilliams: "That’s the one service requiring an appointment. You can book it online through our system. Private tutoring is weekly, and once you sign up, you’re in for the semester. It’s free—SFA covers the cost."
The Best Time to Get Help
KM: "When should students start using AARC services?"
McWilliams: "Right away. Don’t wait until midterms. Students often gamble and think they’ll do better on the second test by studying harder, but that’s risky. The earlier you start, the better your chances of success."
Location and Hours
KM: "Where is the AARC located, and what are the hours?"
McWilliams: "We’re in the library, right by Einstein’s. Our general hours are 8 AM to 8 PM during the semester. But each tutoring service—SI groups, walk-in tables—has its own schedule, so check the website."
Online Tutoring and Writing Help (OWL)
KM: "What if students can’t make it in person?"
McWilliams: "We offer online tutoring appointments and the Online Writing Lab (OWL). With OWL, you submit your paper online and get feedback in 48 hours. It’s not Grammarly—it’s real people giving personalized advice."
KM: "So OWL can help with more than just grammar?"
McWilliams: "Absolutely. Our tutors focus on structure, argument development, and clarity. They know the assignments and what professors expect. OWL helps you refine your ideas, not just your commas."
Step-by-Step Writing Support
KM: "When’s the best time to submit to OWL—early drafts or final versions?"
McWilliams: "I’d recommend submitting around your third or fourth draft, but you can send it in earlier. For brainstorming or outlines, come to the walk-in writing table for face-to-face feedback."
Final Thoughts
KM: "Ms. McWilliams, thank you for breaking it all down. Any final tips for boosting intellectual wellness?"
McWilliams: "Just start early. Don’t wait until you’re struggling. The AARC is here to help—from day one to finals week. And remember—SFA AARC on Google, that’s your key to success!"
