Intro by King Musa
"Yo, what’s good, CheatSheet fam? Welcome to The Hub Hero, where we dive into the seven dimensions of wellness to help you thrive at Stephen F. Austin State University. I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’re talking about physical wellness—how to maintain a healthy body through exercise, nutrition, and self-care.
Joining me is Dr. Andrew Dies, Dean of Students at SFA. Dr. Dies, welcome back to the show!"
Breaking the Ice
KM: "Dr. Dies, before we jump in, I’ve got to ask—last time you mentioned your generous donation to Campus Rec. Any updates there?"
Dr. Dies: "Still donating $32 a month to Campus Rec. It’s my way of giving back! I don’t use the facilities much—I wouldn’t want to take away from the students’ experience. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!"
Defining Physical Wellness
KM: "How do you define physical wellness, and why is it significant to student life?"
Dr. Dies: "Physical wellness is everything about your body—what you put into it, how it feels, and how it interacts with the other dimensions of wellness. It’s about listening to the signals your body gives you, like when you’re tired, in pain, or lacking energy. It’s the foundation of who you are."
KM: "Why is physical wellness crucial for overall well-being?"
Dr. Dies: "If you’re not physically well, it impacts everything—your ability to go to class, maintain relationships, and handle stress. Physical health is often the first domino to fall, affecting all the other dimensions of wellness."
Listening to Your Body
KM: "How can students recognize if they’re physically well or not?"
Dr. Dies: "It’s about paying attention. Are you hydrated? Are you eating foods that nourish you? Do you have consistent headaches or pain? Self-diagnosis isn’t always helpful—don’t rely on WebMD! Instead, use campus resources like the Health Center to check in when something feels off."
Campus Wellness Initiatives
KM: "Who benefits the most from physical wellness initiatives on campus?"
Dr. Dies: "Everyone does! When students prioritize their health, they perform better academically and socially. Campus-wide, healthier students create a more vibrant and successful community. Initiatives like Wellness Wednesdays, yoga classes, and outdoor activities can help make wellness accessible to all."
KM: "What resources does SFA offer for physical wellness?"
Dr. Dies: "Campus Rec is your go-to. We’ve got a climbing wall, pool, lazy river, sand volleyball courts, and even personal training sessions. If you’re unsure about where to start, they offer gym buddies to help you feel more comfortable."
Building Fitness Routines
KM: "When’s the best time for students to fit fitness into their schedules?"
Dr. Dies: "It depends on the individual. Some people thrive with morning workouts, while others prefer evenings. The key is consistency—build a routine and stick to it. Start small, like walking or using the elliptical, and gradually increase your activity level."
Practical Tips for Physical Wellness
KM: "What practical steps can students take to improve their physical wellness?"
Dr. Dies: "Start with small, manageable goals. Walk around campus, take the stairs, or try a new fitness class. Remember, it’s about progress, not perfection. You don’t need to flip tractor tires to be active—just find what works for you and build from there."
Outro by King Musa
"Dr. Dies, thank you for your insights on physical wellness. To all our listeners: Your body is your foundation, so take care of it! Use the resources available here at SFA to stay active and healthy.
Stay tuned for more episodes of The Hub Hero. Next time, we’ll tackle financial wellness and how it impacts your success. Until then, keep moving, stay healthy, and live your best life. It’s your host, King Musa, signing off!"
