Intro by King Musa
"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Hub Hero, the podcast dedicated to exploring the seven dimensions of wellness here at Stephen F. Austin State University. I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’re focusing on social wellness.
In this episode, we’ll dive into the importance of building and maintaining healthy, supportive relationships, effective communication, empathy, and fostering a sense of belonging within communities. Joining me is Dr. Lacy Folsom, Director of Student Engagement, to uncover the resources and support available at SFA to enhance your social well-being. Let’s get started!"
Getting to Know Dr. Lacy Folsom
King Musa: "Dr. Folsom, welcome to The Hub Hero! Let’s start with a fun one—what’s your favorite movie?"
Dr. Lacy Folsom: "Thanks for having me! I wish I was more of a movie person—I don’t have the attention span for them! But if I had to pick one, it’d be Top Gun. That’s one I could watch again and again."
Defining Social Wellness
KM: "Let’s dive in. How would you define social wellness and its significance for students?"
LF: "Social wellness is about finding your people. It’s the connections and communities that fill your cup with joy. For students, this might mean joining organizations, finding a group of friends, or even connecting with a faith-based group. It’s about being your most authentic self and creating a sense of belonging."
Opportunities for Social Engagement at SFA
KM: "What diverse social activities and clubs are available for students on campus?"
LF: "We’ve got 256 student organizations, ranging from cultural groups to interest-based clubs. Diversity is embedded in nearly all of them, and students can always find something that aligns with their passions or interests."
KM: "Would you say involvement helps students feel more connected to campus life?"
LF: "Absolutely! A sense of belonging is crucial for thriving in college. Getting involved builds that connection and gives students a reason to stay engaged."
Breaking Out of the Comfort Zone
KM: "What advice would you give to students who feel stuck in their bubble?"
LF: "Start small. Try 20 seconds of bravery—whether it’s introducing yourself at an event or asking your suitemates to join you. Over time, those small steps add up to meaningful connections and experiences."
Balancing Social and Academic Life
KM: "How can students balance social activities with academics?"
LF: "Think of your commitments like a meal. You might have an appetizer—something low-commitment—then a main course, which requires more focus. It’s about prioritizing and knowing when to step back if needed."
