Hub Hero: Exploring Spiritual Wellness - Finding Purpose and Meaning with Jen Wojtysiak (Nurses Christian Fellowship)

 Intro by King Musa

"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Hub Hero, the podcast dedicated to exploring the seven dimensions of wellness and how they shape your life here at Stephen F. Austin State University.

I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’ll be diving into the enriching dimension of spiritual wellness. In this episode, we’ll explore its role in finding purpose and meaning in life. Joining me is Jen Wojtysiak from the Nurses Christian Fellowship to discuss the importance of spiritual growth and how students can explore their personal beliefs and values. Let’s get started!"

Understanding Spiritual Wellness
King Musa: "How do you define spiritual wellness, and what does it encompass?"
Jen Wojtysiak: "That’s a great question, and I love that you’re having these conversations. Spiritual wellness is about paying attention to that part of who you are and creating space for practices that nurture it. It’s about care for yourself in a deeper way."

KM: "Why is it important for students to explore their beliefs and values during college?"
JW: "As human beings, we’re integrated—our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves are all connected. But spiritual wellness is often overlooked because it doesn’t always have external reminders. It’s essential to be intentional, especially when life’s pressures start building up."

Benefits of Spiritual Growth
KM: "Who can benefit from engaging in activities that promote spiritual growth?"
JW: "Everyone can. College students, especially, face overwhelming pressures—academic, financial, relational. Engaging in spiritual practices creates a space to process these challenges, align with a moral compass, and reconnect with who you are."

KM: "I can relate to that. For me, tapping into my faith and connecting with God helps me handle life’s chaos. It reminds me to focus on what truly matters."
JW: "Exactly. When you’re grounded spiritually, it helps you handle everything else with a sense of peace and clarity."

Getting Started with Spiritual Wellness
KM: "When’s the best time for students to start exploring spiritual wellness?"
JW: "The minute you step on campus! College is a time for new experiences and relationships. Find a community that supports your growth and explore questions about faith, values, and purpose."

KM: "That’s true. Building connections early helps students stay grounded and avoid negative influences later on."
JW: "Exactly. A supportive community can be a lifeline."

Resources for Spiritual Wellness
KM: "Where can students find resources for spiritual wellness on campus?"
JW: "Start with student organizations. Many are interdenominational and welcoming to everyone. Churches and spiritual groups in town are also great resources. It might feel risky at first, but the rewards of finding a community are worth it."

KM: "Tell us about the Nurses Christian Fellowship and how students can connect with it."
JW: "We focus on the unique spiritual needs of nursing and healthcare students. From managing compassion fatigue to offering spiritual care for patients, we provide support and resources. Students can reach out through faculty advisors like Kathy Barr or Megan Nichols, or find us on Instagram for meeting details."

Practical Steps for Spiritual Growth
KM: "What activities or practices do you recommend for fostering spiritual growth?"
JW: "Start small and be intentional. It could be a breath prayer as you walk to class, reading a psalm before bed, or finding a spiritual community. Commit to rhythms that work for you and invite others to join you—it makes the journey easier."

KM: "That’s great advice. Personally, I start my day with a devotional and end it with scripture or prayer with friends. It keeps me grounded."
JW: "That’s wonderful. Even a small practice, like a five-minute devotion, can transform your day."

Outro by King Musa
"Jen, thank you for sharing your wisdom and insight on spiritual wellness. To all our listeners, remember that spiritual wellness is more than a belief system—it’s about finding purpose and meaning in your life.
