Intro by King Musa
"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Hub Hero, the podcast where we explore the seven dimensions of wellness and how they shape life at Stephen F. Austin State University. I’m your host, King Musa, and I’m thrilled to guide you on this wellness journey.
We’re kicking off this series with a special guest who’s an expert in student wellness: Dr. Andrew Dies, Dean of Students at SFA. Today, we’ll explore what wellness means, why it’s essential, and how to balance its seven dimensions: emotional, physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, and financial. Let’s dive in!"
Getting to Know Dr. Dies and Wellness at SFA
King Musa: "Dr. Dies, welcome to The Hub Hero! How’s your day going?"
Dr. Andrew Dies: "Thanks for having me! My day’s been great—just navigating some student affairs and solving the world’s problems, as we do."
KM: "To start, can you explain what wellness means in a university setting?"
AD: "Sure! Wellness is about balance across the seven dimensions. It’s not about everything being perfect, but about maintaining focus on each dimension. When one’s out of balance, it can throw everything off—like a bubble being pushed out of shape. Keeping that balance is key to thriving, especially for students."
Understanding the Seven Dimensions of Wellness
KM: "Can you break down the seven dimensions of wellness for us?"
AD:
- Emotional: Managing feelings and stress.
- Physical: Taking care of your body through exercise and health.
- Intellectual: Expanding your knowledge and critical thinking.
- Social: Building meaningful relationships and understanding diversity.
- Spiritual: Connecting with something greater, whether that’s faith, nature, or a higher purpose.
- Environmental: Considering the physical spaces and people you surround yourself with.
- Financial: Managing money and planning your career.
"Each dimension overlaps, creating a balanced life when they’re all addressed."
The Importance of Wellness for Students
KM: "Why is it crucial for students to focus on these dimensions during college?"
AD: "College is a time to learn, fail, and grow. It’s about testing boundaries—figuring out what works for you in a safe, controlled environment. By focusing on wellness, students can navigate challenges better and set themselves up for success."
Resources at SFA for Wellness
KM: "What resources does SFA offer to support these dimensions of wellness?"
AD: "We’ve invested heavily in student health and wellness, including the Health and Wellness Hub, counseling services, and programs like TimelyCare for telehealth support. Students also have access to recreational facilities, group counseling, and an A-to-Z resource page that guides them to the right support."
Advice for Starting a Wellness Journey
KM: "What advice would you give students starting their wellness journey?"
AD: "Be open to trying new things and challenging your beliefs. College is about growth, and that means stepping outside your comfort zone. Start with the Health and Wellness Hub or explore campus recreational activities. The key is to take the first step and build from there."
