 Intro by King Musa

"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Cheat Sheet, the podcast where we decode success with creators, professors, and professionals.

I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’re diving into the secrets of student success with none other than Dr. Andrew Dies, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students at SFA. We’ll explore his journey, his insights into student wellness, and how to navigate college life with purpose. Let’s get started!"

Getting to Know Dr. Dies
King Musa: "Welcome, Dr. Dies! Can you share a bit about your educational background and how it shapes your approach to supporting students?"
Dr. Andrew Dies: "Thanks for having me! I hold three degrees: a bachelor’s in social work, a master’s in higher education, and a doctorate. My background in social work taught me the importance of empathy and helping others thrive. It’s the foundation of my work in student affairs—ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed."

KM: "Wow, three degrees! How did social work influence your career path?"
AD: "Social work showed me the power of making even a small positive impact in someone’s life. That belief drives everything I do, from addressing challenges to celebrating student successes."

Navigating Challenges and Building Resilience
KM: "Your career path has had some twists and turns. What lessons have you learned from those experiences?"
AD: "Resilience is key. Life throws curveballs, but every challenge teaches you something. Whether it’s navigating unemployment, dealing with a toxic workplace, or pursuing new opportunities, it’s about finding solutions and pushing forward."

KM: "How do you help students overcome challenges and find their footing?"
AD: "By meeting them where they are. Whether they need emotional support, academic resources, or just someone to listen, my goal is to walk beside them. Sometimes I lead, sometimes I support from behind, but the goal is always their success."

Fostering a Supportive Campus Environment
KM: "How does SFA prioritize student wellness and inclusivity?"
AD: "The Health and Wellness Hub is a prime example. It’s a one-stop shop for counseling, health services, and even resources like a food pantry. Our goal is to address the seven dimensions of wellness, ensuring students can focus on their studies and personal growth."

KM: "What’s your vision for student affairs at SFA?"
AD: "We’re evolving. From new academic programs to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution, we’re laying the groundwork for a vibrant, inclusive future. SFA five years from now will be a transformed institution."

Encouraging Student Involvement
KM: "Why is it important for students to get involved on campus?"
AD: "Connection is everything. Being part of a club, organization, or community enhances your experience and improves academic outcomes. Plus, it’s a chance to explore your values, try new things, and build lifelong friendships."

KM: "For students hesitant to step out of their comfort zones, what’s your advice?"
AD: "Start small. Attend an event, join a study group, or try something new. Growth happens when you challenge yourself, and college is the perfect place to figure out who you are and what you want."
