Getting to Know Mr. Cleo House Jr.
King Musa: "Mr. House, can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role at SFA?"
Cleo House Jr.: "Of course! I’m Cleo House Jr., Director of the School of Theater and Dance at SFA. I’ve been here since 2017, and I oversee our programs, advocate for the arts, and support students in their creative journeys. I’m originally from Hooks, Texas, so it feels great to be back in East Texas."

Personal Background and Career Beginnings
KM: "Where did you grow up, and what sparked your passion for theater?"
CHJ: "I grew up in a sports-oriented family. My dad played professional football, and my mom was a coach. But I found my love for theater by accident in high school when someone invited me to audition for a play. I landed a small role and immediately fell in love with the craft. That moment shifted everything for me."

KM: "What do you enjoy outside of work?"
CHJ: "I love to cook, I’m a huge Janet Jackson fan, and I enjoy hosting a podcast with friends. I’m also a TV junkie—it’s how I unwind, whether it’s watching trash TV or Broadway productions online."

Vision for the School of Theater and Dance
KM: "What’s your vision for the School of Theater and Dance?"
CHJ: "We’re focused on growth and innovation. Our enrollment is the largest it’s been since combining theater and dance into one school. We’re also working to launch a BFA in musical theater and a BFA in performance choreography for dance. We want to provide students with top-tier facilities and opportunities, and we’re always looking for funding to enhance our productions."

Career Journey and Challenges
KM: "What was your journey to becoming Director of Theater and Dance?"
CHJ: "It’s been a winding road. I started in theater in high school, pursued a degree in theater, and later earned my MFA. I’ve worked professionally in theater, taught at high schools, and held administrative roles at universities. Returning to SFA felt like coming full circle, as I attended theater camp here in high school. My journey taught me to embrace challenges and value every step along the way."

KM: "What challenges do you face as Director?"
CHJ: "Balancing the needs of students, faculty, and administration can be tricky. The biggest challenge is managing people and resolving conflicts. But it’s also rewarding because it teaches me to approach problems from multiple perspectives."

Exciting Announcements and Advice for Students
KM: "What upcoming events or initiatives should we look forward to?"
CHJ: "We have several productions coming up, including The Drunken City in October and Danceworks alongside Three Musketeers in November. It’s exciting to see our students and faculty collaborate to bring these projects to life. For a full list, check out our website or call our box office!"

KM: "What advice do you have for theater and dance students?"
CHJ: "Do what you love and strive to be the best at it. Passion is what will sustain you through the challenges of this field. Build relationships with your peers, because those connections will support your career. And remember, this is your time to train and prepare for the future, so take it seriously."
