Hub Hero: Nurturing Your Spirit - Exploring Spiritual Wellness with Rev. John Cain (Lutheran Student Fellowship)

 Intro by King Musa

"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Hub Hero, the podcast dedicated to exploring the seven dimensions of wellness and how they impact your life here at Stephen F. Austin State University.

I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’ll dive into the rich dimension of spiritual wellness. In this episode, we’ll explore its role in finding purpose and meaning in life. Joining me is Reverend John Cain from the Lutheran Student Fellowship. We’ll discuss the importance of spiritual growth, exploring personal beliefs, and activities that support spiritual development. Let’s get started!"

Getting to Know Rev. Cain
King Musa: "Welcome, Pastor Cain! Let’s start with an icebreaker—what’s your favorite summer activity?"
Rev. John Cain: "Thanks for having me, Musa! I’d have to say travel—especially to Europe. Salzburg, Austria, was a standout for me, with its rich culture and incredible museums."

KM: "Sounds amazing! Let’s dive in. How do you define spiritual wellness, and what does it encompass?"
JC: "Spiritual wellness is a key part of being a whole and healthy person. It’s like one part of a wheel—if it’s neglected, you’ve got a flat tire. While it’s harder to measure than physical health, it deeply influences our happiness and longevity."

The Importance of Spiritual Growth
KM: "Why is it important for students to explore their beliefs and values during college?"
JC: "College is a time of intellectual and personal growth. Students are figuring out not just what they want to do, but how they want to live. Laying the foundation for spiritual wellness now enriches the rest of their lives."

KM: "For students coming to campus without family or church guidance, how can they start exploring spirituality?"
JC: "It starts with finding a unifying foundation, like the Bible, to guide exploration. Being part of a community with shared values helps navigate the overwhelming exposure to new ideas and activities."

The Benefits of Spiritual Practices
KM: "Who benefits from spiritual growth, and why?"
JC: "Everyone does. We’re created with a longing that only spiritual connection can truly satisfy. Material or temporary pursuits can’t fill that void. A relationship with God brings peace, purpose, and fulfillment that surpasses all else."

KM: "I completely agree. For me, letting God guide my life helps me release control and trust in His plan."
JC: "Exactly. It’s about relinquishing control and finding satisfaction in something eternal."

Starting the Journey to Spiritual Wellness
KM: "When should students start exploring spiritual wellness?"
JC: "The best time is now. College offers a fresh start, and finding a spiritual group or Bible study early on can provide support and encouragement throughout the journey."

KM: "Absolutely. Building connections early helps students stay grounded amidst life’s challenges."
JC: "It does. Prayer and meditation are also practical ways to manage stress and center your mind."

Resources for Spiritual Wellness at SFA
KM: "Where can students find resources for spiritual wellness on campus?"
JC: "The Lutheran Student Fellowship hosts weekly Bible studies at the student center and organizes other activities like Sunday classes, meals, and discussions. We’re also connected to the Redeemer Lutheran Church in town for additional support."

KM: "That’s great! It’s encouraging to know there are accessible resources for students to connect with."

Engaging in Spiritual Practices
KM: "How can students foster spiritual growth and a sense of purpose?"
JC: "Start by exploring your gifts and how you can serve others. The Bible reminds us in Ephesians 2:8-10 that we’re saved by grace for good works. Engaging in practices like prayer, service, and relationship-building helps us fulfill our purpose."

KM: "Sharing testimonies can also make a big impact. It’s not about preaching rules, but sharing how faith has worked in our own lives."
JC: "Exactly. Christianity isn’t about imposing beliefs—it’s about offering hope and building relationships through personal stories and faith."

Outro by King Musa
"Pastor Cain, thank you for sharing your wisdom on spiritual wellness. To all our listeners, remember that spiritual wellness isn’t just a belief system—it’s about finding purpose and meaning in life.
