Intro by King Musa
"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Cheat Sheet, where we decode success for creators, professionals, and community leaders.
Today, we’re joined by Fire Chief Michael Brown of the Nacogdoches Fire Department. Chief Brown has decades of experience and a passion for safety, leadership, and serving the community. We’ll dive into his journey, fire prevention strategies, and his advice on keeping yourself and your loved ones safe. Let’s get started!"
Getting to Know Chief Michael Brown
King Musa: "Welcome, Chief Brown! Tell us about your background and how you got started in the fire department."
Michael Brown: "Thanks for having me! I was born and raised in Nacogdoches. I started working part-time for the city during summers between school years, which led to a full-time role as a fire arson investigator and code enforcement officer. That experience got my foot in the door of fire service. I eventually trained as a structural firefighter and worked my way up."
KM: "Was there a specific moment that inspired you to join the fire department?"
MB: "Honestly, I didn’t grow up wanting to be a firefighter. Unlike many in this field who dream of it from a young age, I kind of backed into it. It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. The opportunity to serve my community and make a positive impact is incredibly fulfilling."
Leadership and Core Values
KM: "What core values guide your leadership as Fire Chief?"
MB: "Integrity, honesty, and self-discipline are foundational. I lead by example, owning my mistakes and learning from them. For firefighters, it boils down to doing the right thing. When faced with tough decisions, we ask: Is it good for the community? Is it good for the department? Is it good for the team? If the answer is yes, then that’s the path we take."
Fire Safety and Community Engagement
KM: "What are the top fire safety tips everyone should know?"
MB: "Start with the basics—working smoke detectors are crucial. Change the batteries regularly and ensure they’re functioning. Cooking fires are a leading cause of house fires, so always keep a fire extinguisher handy. Be mindful of candles, and avoid using low-quality extension cords, especially for heavy appliances. Look for UL-listed products to ensure they meet safety standards."
KM: "How does the fire department educate the community on fire prevention?"
MB: "October is Fire Prevention Month in Nacogdoches. We visit schools to teach kids fire safety practices that they carry into adulthood. We also offer training for civic groups, church organizations, and apartment complexes. Education is a continuous effort to ensure the community stays informed."
Adapting to Modern Challenges
KM: "How is the fire department addressing emerging risks, like electric vehicle fires?"
MB: "Electric vehicle fires are a new challenge because traditional firefighting methods don’t always work. We’re actively training and researching tactics to handle these situations safely. Evolving technology requires us to stay on the cutting edge to protect our community effectively."
KM: "What’s your vision for the fire department’s future?"
MB: "It’s about continuous improvement. We’re investing in training, leveraging technology like drones for situational awareness, and staying adaptable to modern firefighting challenges. We’re also focused on maintaining strong community ties and improving public safety education."
