Intro by King Musa
"Yo, you know what it is! It’s your man, King Musa, and welcome to The Hub Hero, the podcast dedicated to exploring the seven dimensions of wellness and how they impact your life here at Stephen F. Austin State University.
I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’ll dive into the dimension of intellectual wellness. In this episode, we’ll explore engaging, creative, and stimulating mental activities, the importance of lifelong learning, and honing problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Joining me is Jonathan Helmke, the Library Director at SFA, to uncover resources and support available to enhance your intellectual wellness. Let’s get started!"
Getting to Know Jonathan Helmke
King Musa: "Welcome, Jonathan! Let’s start with a fun one—what’s your favorite style of media? Are you a TV watcher or more into books?"
Jonathan Helmke: "Thanks for having me! I’m actually more of a news consumer. As a political science major, I’ve always been fascinated by current events and how media has evolved over the years. But no, I don’t just sit and read books all day!"
KM: "That’s surprising, but it makes sense. Let’s dive in. How do you define intellectual wellness, and why is it important for students?"
JH: "Intellectual wellness is about problem-solving and critical thinking. It’s helping students figure out where to start—whether with an assignment, a job, or personal growth. It’s about breaking down fear and taking that first step."
Developing Intellectual Wellness
KM: "Fear of asking questions can hold students back. How can they overcome this?"
JH: "Start small and be honest. There’s no such thing as a dumb question. Face-to-face conversations are ideal for clarity and connection. Once students take that first step, they often realize the value of asking questions."
KM: "When should students prioritize their intellectual wellness?"
JH: "The earlier, the better. Engage with professors, ask questions, and seek help even before the first exam. It’s about building confidence and learning from experiences—starting small and growing over time."
The Role of the Library in Intellectual Growth
KM: "How can students benefit from actively engaging with the library?"
JH: "The library is more than books. It’s a space tailored for learning, offering resources like study rooms, quiet zones, group areas, and soundproof rooms. We’re open late, so students can find a place that works for their needs and schedule."
KM: "Where can students access resources and support within the library?"
JH: "Students can visit us in person or online. Our website offers virtual chat support and booking for study spaces. For face-to-face help, the Library Services Desk is the go-to spot for questions, big or small. We’re here to make sure students get what they need."
Fostering Lifelong Learning
KM: "How can students enhance their intellectual wellness through the library’s resources?"
JH: "Start with one need—maybe finding an academic article or using the writing center. Over time, explore more resources like the Maker Space or supplemental instruction groups. Intellectual wellness grows step by step."
KM: "Do you have success stories from students who’ve used the library?"
JH: "Absolutely. We’ve had students improve their grades, secure internships, and ace interviews thanks to library resources. Some even avoid unnecessary expenses by accessing articles for free through us. It’s all about asking questions and utilizing what’s available."
