Intro by King Musa
"Yo, what’s good, CheatSheet fam? You’re locked into The Hub Hero, the podcast where we explore the seven dimensions of wellness and how they shape your journey here at Stephen F. Austin State University. I’m your host, King Musa, and today we’re diving into intellectual wellness—lifelong learning, critical thinking, and expanding your mind.
Joining us is Dr. Andrew Dies, Dean of Students at SFA. Dr. Dies, welcome to the podcast!"
Breaking the Ice
KM: "Dr. Dies, glad to have you back! Quick question—what’d you have for lunch today?"
Dr. Dies: "Thanks for having me! I had pulled pork barbecue with some cheesy broccoli. Didn’t touch a vegetable unless we’re counting the broccoli as one—though I might’ve gone a little heavy on the cheese!"
Defining Intellectual Wellness
KM: "Let’s get started. How do you define intellectual wellness?"
Dr. Dies: "Intellectual wellness is about your mind. It’s what you’re learning inside the classroom and beyond—interpersonal skills, communication, and critical thinking. It’s all about growing and challenging yourself intellectually."
KM: "Why should students prioritize intellectual wellness during their academic journey?"
Dr. Dies: "Your degree is a stepping stone to other opportunities, but it’s more than that. Intellectual wellness is about shaping your journey. Whether it’s learning from faculty, peers, or hands-on experiences, prioritizing intellectual growth opens doors and helps you discover your passions."
Navigating Intellectual Growth
KM: "What challenges did you face in your academic journey?"
Dr. Dies: "Initially, I thought I wanted to be a high school social studies teacher, but I quickly realized working with high schoolers wasn’t for me. After some trial and error—and flipping through an old-school course catalog—I found my way into social work, which was a perfect fit. Learning isn’t always linear; it’s a journey of discovery."
Finding Your Path
KM: "What advice would you give students unsure about their majors?"
Dr. Dies: "It’s your education—make it yours. Don’t stick with a major just because your parents want you to. Follow what excites you. If you’re not engaged, it’ll show in your grades and your overall experience. And remember, it’s okay to change your major—most students do it two to three times!"
The Role of Resources
KM: "Where can students access resources for intellectual growth?"
Dr. Dies: "The Academic Assistance Resource Center (AARC) offers tutoring and supplemental instruction. The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) can help with internships and career paths. And don’t underestimate the power of office hours—faculty are here to help you succeed."
Practical Tips for Success
KM: "How can students enhance their intellectual wellness?"
Dr. Dies: "Time management is key. Use planners, set deadlines, and build a routine. Don’t wait until the last minute—it’s easier to stay on top of things than to dig yourself out of a hole. And always ask for help when you need it. Resources are here for a reason."
Outro by King Musa
"Dr. Dies, thank you for sharing your insights on intellectual wellness. To our listeners: Never stop learning and challenging yourself. Intellectual wellness is a vital part of your overall well-being, and SFA has the tools to help you thrive.
Stay tuned for more episodes of The Hub Hero. Next time, we’ll explore physical wellness and how it connects to your success. Until then, keep expanding your mind and embracing new challenges. It’s your host, King Musa, signing off!"
